In MLS action, eight games take up Sunday’s schedule beginning with an early-evening match between New York City FC and Atlanta United and finishing with an inter-conference duel between the San Jose Earthquakes and Chicago Fire. In this article, we’ll focus on Real Salt Lake’s visit to Minnesota as they search for a win to climb up to second place in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, Nashville SC has an opportunity to climb up to fourth place in the West, but they’ll have to take down ninth-seeded Nashville SC.
Minnesota United (+105) vs Real Salt Lake (+240)
In six meetings between the two clubs, while playing in Minnesota, the home team has won four times. Unfortunately, Minnesota has dropped the two most recent games, scoring just one goal during that span. They snapped a three-game losing skid on Wednesday but enter tonight’s match without a win on home turf in their last three outings. A fourth loss tonight will tie their longest streak without a victory since losing four consecutive games in the summer of 2017. Fortunately for them, the team they face is entering tonight’s game with a less-than-favourable road record.

Leave this field empty if you're human:
In nine matches on the road, Salt Lake holds a poor record with 2-4-3, including one win in their previous seven games. Their dominance at home (6-0-2) is why they remain in third place in the Western Conference, but they’ll need to fine-tune their play when entering enemy territory. Their defense will need to improve if they wish to change anything, as nine of the last 19 goals conceded came from set plays, tied for the highest allowed by any team with Nashville SC. Tread carefully with this one and perhaps entertain the idea of Salt Lake earning its third road win. Three of four road losses have come at the hands of playoff-bound teams.
Nashville SC (-145) vs Portland Timbers (+375)
Since arriving in the MLS in 2020, Nashville has played Portland just once, dropping a 1-0 decision. It was Nashville’s second game of their franchise’s existence, a season that ended with an 8-7-8 record and a seventh-place finish. Their 2-1 loss on June 19 was their first home defeat in over a year and a half and just the third loss in their previous 36 games. With a win tonight, Nashville can leapfrog over Dallas and Seattle for the fourth seed in the West, and it would also become their first two-game winning streak since defeating Columbus and Kansas City in April.
The Timbers are coming into tonight’s match with some momentum after stringing wins together for the first time this season. Unfortunately, they’ve lost six consecutive road games and have just one win as the away team this year. With a win tonight, Portland can jump to seventh place in the West, surpassing Vancouver and Los Angeles. It goes without saying that their +375 odds place them as heavy underdogs due to a lacklustre result in recent memory. Take Nashville SC to win big tonight, and consider taking pairing it with them finishing with a clean slate for +180 odds.
